How long have you lived in your hometown?

Duration question — span plus depth. Years plus what they built.

Model answer (30 seconds)

"All my life until two years ago — twenty-two years in the same neighborhood, same school, same corner shop. I only left for university, so those roots run absurdly deep."

Longer version

"Twenty-two unbroken years wallpapered my entire formation: the street taught me cricket, the neighbors raised me collectively, the corner shopkeeper extended credit that taught me trust economics before I knew the term. Leaving for university was my first real rupture — suddenly anonymous in a city where nobody knew my family. That contrast taught me what rootedness actually provides: not comfort but identity scaffolding. I visit monthly now, and each return layers nostalgia over change — familiar streets, unfamiliar cafes. Duration built the foundation; distance built the appreciation."

Quick tip

Duration answers need the number plus its meaning (roots, networks, identity). Years-alone is data; years-plus-what-they-built is story.

Phrases examiners reward

  • unbroken years — continuous residence
  • raised collectively — community parenting
  • trust economics — credit as social lesson
  • first real rupture — initial break (precise noun)
  • identity scaffolding — support structure metaphor
  • layers nostalgia over change — return-visit feeling

Part 3 bridge

Residence duration opens Part 3: rootedness vs mobility, community breakdown, urban anonymity, migration effects on identity.

Quick answers

Born-and-raised vs newcomer: which is better?

Both work with the right frame: lifers claim depth, newcomers claim fresh eyes. Depth-of-roots vs clarity-of-vision — either is compelling.

What if I moved around a lot?

Movement is material: each place taught something different. Nomadic childhoods produce comparative insights examiners find interesting.

How precise should durations be?

Lifespans in round terms: all twenty-four years, since 2019. Exact dates sound like forms; life phases sound like stories.
