How has your hometown changed?

Change question — then vs now, twice. Two transformations, compared.

Band-9 sample answer (30 seconds)

"Physically, it's vertical now — malls and apartment towers where single-storey houses stood. Socially, it's faster: delivery apps replaced corner-shop chats, and nobody knows neighbors like before. Progress with a price."

Extended version

"The skyline tells the story: my childhood horizon was rooftops and minarets; now it's construction cranes in permanent rotation. A motorway slashed travel times and stitched us to Lahore's economy — genuine uplift, with commuter suburbs sprawling behind it. But the texture thinned. Evening street cricket died to traffic; the bazaar's bargaining theater lost to fixed-price malls; elders lament a courtesy the young never learned. I hold both truths: my cousins found jobs that once required migration, and my grandmother's street no longer exists except in memory. Cities, like people, trade something for everything they gain."

Delivery tip

Change answers need paired contrasts: was X, now Y — twice. Two then-now pairs with one evaluative close is the complete 30-second change arc.

Vocabulary to steal

  • vertical now — high-rise transformation
  • in permanent rotation — constant construction
  • stitched to economy — connectedness metaphor
  • texture thinned — character loss image
  • bargaining theater — market drama (evocative phrase)
  • trade something for everything — development cost aphorism

Part 3 bridge

Urban change feeds Part 3: development vs heritage, modernization costs, city planning, generational divides over progress.

FAQs

Positive, negative, or mixed changes?

Mixed is most credible: malls arrived and street life thinned. Development-alongside-loss mirrors every real city and demonstrates balanced thinking.

How many changes should I name?

Two substantial ones: one physical (buildings, roads), one social (pace, community). Physical-plus-social covers the complete picture.
