The widespread use of social media has advantages and disadvantages. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Band-9 sample essay

Social media now mediates friendship, news, and commerce for billions, making its ledger worth auditing honestly. Its advantages are transformative but its harms are structural — and on balance, I believe disciplined use yields net benefit while unregulated design extracts net harm.

The advantages center on connection and voice. Diaspora families sustain daily intimacy across continents; small businesses reach customers without advertising budgets; marginalized groups organize movements that legacy gatekeepers once blocked. During disasters, platforms coordinate rescues faster than institutions. These are not conveniences but capability transfers — power redistributed downward at planetary scale.

The disadvantages, however, are engineered, not accidental. Engagement algorithms amplify outrage because anger retains attention; comparison metrics — likes, followers — industrialize insecurity, particularly among teenagers. Misinformation outruns correction by design, since falsehoods are novel and novelty engages. The same architecture that connects also addicts, and the profits flow upward while the psychological costs settle on users.

Whether advantages outweigh disadvantages therefore depends on agency. Active, intentional use — messaging loved ones, learning skills, building businesses — clearly benefits. Passive, algorithmic consumption — endless feeds optimized for outrage — clearly harms. The verdict is conditional: social media is a tool whose balance sheet reflects its user. Societies should demand healthier defaults — chronological feeds, friction on virality — so the average experience resembles the best uses, not the most profitable ones.

Why this scores Band 9

Task Response (9): Directly answers "outweigh" with a conditional verdict — neither cheerleading nor doom, but agency-dependent. Both sides developed with mechanisms, not slogans.

Coherence & Cohesion (9): Connection/voice vs engineered-harm paragraphs mirror in structure; the verdict paragraph converts both into a design prescription. "Ledger" motif unifies.

Lexical Resource (9): Platform-analysis precision: "mediates," "gatekeepers," "capability transfers," "engagement algorithms," "industrialize insecurity," "friction on virality." Sophisticated, current, accurate.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy (9): Em-dash qualifications, semicolon balances, conditional verdicts, parallel closes. Flawless.

Vocabulary to steal

  • ledger worth auditing — balance-sheet framing
  • capability transfers — power redistribution (precise term)
  • engineered, not accidental — design-intent distinction
  • industrialize insecurity — scale metaphor for harm
  • falsehoods are novel — misinformation mechanism
  • healthier defaults — design-policy prescription close

FAQs

Do advantages/disadvantages essays need my opinion?

Only if asked (do the advantages outweigh...). Otherwise, analyze both sides and conclude with a balanced judgment, not a personal stance.

How many points per side?

Two developed points per side beats three shallow ones. Development means mechanism plus example: how it works and where it shows.

How do I avoid repeating social media clichés?

Specify mechanisms: algorithmic amplification, comparison metrics, diaspora connection. Named mechanisms turn clichés into analysis.
