Who Cooks in Your Family? Part 1 Answer (Band 9)

Band-9 Part 1 answer on family cooking roles, with household vocabulary, role-evolution framing, and delivery tip.

Who does the cooking in your family?

Roles question — who, what specialty, how evolving. Cook plus dish plus change.

Model answer (30 seconds)

"Mother still commands daily cooking — nobody contests her dal. But weekends went democratic: father grills, I experiment, and everyone critiques. The kitchen runs matriarchal weekdays, federal weekends."

Longer version

"Cooking authority in our house follows seniority tempered by enthusiasm. Mother owns everyday meals with an efficiency born of decades — same quality at scale whether feeding four or fourteen surprise guests. Father discovered grilling at fifty and now treats weekends as performance art, complete with apron slogans. I contribute experiments, some adopted into rotation (my pasta), some retired by consensus (the infamous seaweed episode). What moved me is the shift: daughters once exempted, now expected to learn; sons once excused, now assigned. The kitchen democratized within a generation — delicious progress, literally."

Quick tip

Family-role answers need the main cook, their signature, and the direction of change. Who-signature-evolution covers tradition and modernity together.

Phrases examiners reward

  • commands daily cooking — leads kitchen (strong verb)
  • matriarchal weekdays, federal weekends — governance metaphor (memorable)
  • performance art — theatrical cooking
  • retired by consensus — democratically dropped (dry humor)
  • infamous episode — legendary failure
  • delicious progress — tasty double meaning close

Part 3 bridge

Family cooking roles open Part 3: gender role evolution, intergenerational households, cooking skill transmission, shared domestic labor.

Quick answers

Traditional gender roles: how do I handle them?

Describe honestly, note evolution: mother historically, now shared with father learning weekend specials. Honest history plus visible change is the mature frame.

What if I live alone?

Then you are the cook, planner, and dishwasher: full culinary self-sufficiency. Solo cooking as competence narrative works perfectly.
