Describe Your Hometown: Cue Card + Band-9 Answer

A Band-9 answer to the 'hometown' cue card with change-over-time structure, urban vocabulary, and a prep plan that fills two minutes easily.

Hometown is the most recycled topic in IELTS — it appears in Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. Nail it once, use it three times.

The cue card

Describe your hometown.

You should say:

  • where it is
  • what it is like
  • what people do there

…and explain how you feel about it.

Your 1-minute prep plan

Use the change-over-time framework: hometown then vs. now. Note one childhood memory, one visible change, and one feeling. Past-to-present contrast automatically produces varied tenses — the examiner hears range without you forcing it.

Band-9 sample answer

"My hometown is Faisalabad, an industrial city in central Pakistan, about three hours from Lahore by road. It is famous for textiles — people call it the Manchester of Pakistan — but for me it will always be the city of my childhood streets.

Growing up, it felt like a big village. Everyone knew each other, children played cricket in the streets until dark, and my grandmother's house was the gathering point for the whole extended family. Life moved slowly, and honestly, as a teenager I found that frustrating. I dreamed of escaping to a bigger city.

The city has transformed since then. There are shopping malls, a new motorway connection, and cafes where my old playground used to be. Part of me mourns the quiet streets, but I cannot deny the progress has created opportunities — my cousins who once would have migrated for work now run online businesses from home.

How do I feel about it? Complicated, but fond. It is noisy, dusty, and chaotic — and completely mine. When people ask where I am from, I say Faisalabad with pride, because its work ethic shaped mine. Whatever I achieve in life, including moving abroad, that city is the starting point of the story."

Vocabulary to steal

  • industrial city — precise, natural collocation
  • gathering point — where people meet
  • moved slowly — describing pace of life
  • mourns the quiet streets — emotional, high-level verb
  • cannot deny the progress — balanced concession structure
  • work ethic — attitude to hard work

Both. Balanced views with reasons sound mature and give you contrast language, which examiners reward under Coherence.

Is hometown also a Part 1 topic?

Yes, it appears in Part 1 as short answers and in Part 3 as discussion about cities and urbanization. This card prepares you for all three parts.

This topic feeds directly into Part 3 city questions — bank more place practice in the cue cards library.
