Describe Your Favorite Restaurant or Cafe: Cue Card + Band-9 Answer

A Band-9 answer to the 'favorite restaurant' cue card with food-and-atmosphere description and social-story structure.

Food cards test appetite language — describe one dish so well the examiner gets hungry. That is Band 9.

What you will be asked

Describe your favorite restaurant or cafe.

You should say:

  • where it is
  • what kind of food it serves
  • how often you go there

…and explain why it is your favorite.

Your 60-second plan

Pick the place with a signature dish and a social ritual — Friday dinners, study sessions, family celebrations. Note the place, the dish (in sensory detail), and the people you go with. Dish plus people equals story.

Model answer (Band 8–9)

"My favorite place is a tiny chapli kebab shop in my hometown's old bazaar — twelve seats, no signboard, run by the same family for three generations. Food critics would walk past it; locals cross the city for it.

The kebabs are the entire reason: minced meat mixed with pomegranate seeds, green chilies, and spices I cannot identify, pressed flat and fried in a giant black wok until the edges turn crisp while the center stays juicy. They arrive on fresh naan with sliced onions and a yogurt sauce, and the first bite — hot, tangy, slightly smoky — genuinely never gets old. I have eaten there perhaps a hundred times.

I go whenever I am back home, usually with my father, who first took me there as a child. Our ritual is fixed: two kebabs each, endless tea, and conversation that wanders everywhere. Some of our best talks happened over that chipped Formica table.

It is my favorite not because the food is fashionable but because it is honest — same recipe, same family, same taste for decades, at prices a student can afford. In a world of Instagram restaurants designed for photos, this shop is designed for eating. That authenticity, plus my father's company, makes every visit taste like home."

Phrases examiners reward

  • no signboard — telling detail that signals authenticity
  • crisp edges, juicy center — texture contrast (food writing gold)
  • genuinely never gets old — lasting enthusiasm
  • ritual is fixed — tradition, precise noun
  • chipped Formica table — specific worn detail
  • designed for eating, not photos — modern cultural critique

Common questions

Fancy restaurant or street food stall?

The stall usually wins. Strong opinions about ordinary food sound authentic, while generic praise of fine dining sounds memorized.

How much food description is enough?

One dish in delicious detail, not the whole menu. A single signature dish described well proves vocabulary; a menu recital proves memory.
