Describe an Item of Clothing You Like: Cue Card + Band-9 Answer
A Band-9 answer to the 'clothing you like' cue card with style storytelling, fabric vocabulary, and identity reflection.
Clothing cards are identity cards — what you wear signals who you are. Connect the garment to the self.
The cue card
Describe an item of clothing you like to wear.
You should say:
- what it is
- when you wear it
- how you got it
…and explain why you like it.
Your 1-minute prep plan
Pick the garment with an occasion attached — weddings, graduations, festivals give you story for free. Note the item (fabric, color, fit), the occasion, and what wearing it feels like. Garment plus occasion plus feeling: complete.
Band-9 sample answer
"My favorite item of clothing is a deep-green embroidered kurta my mother had tailored for my sister's wedding last year. It is cotton-silk, knee-length, with delicate gold threadwork around the collar and cuffs — traditional but cut in a modern, clean silhouette.
I wear it to every significant occasion now: both Eids, family weddings, and once to an IELTS speaking mock, which my teacher found hilarious. There is something about putting it on that straightens my posture — I stand differently in clothes made specifically for my measurements. Off-the-rack shirts never do that.
I like it for three reasons. First, the craftsmanship: a local tailor spent two weeks on the embroidery, and up close you can see the human hand in every stitch. Second, the memory woven into it — I associate it with dancing all night at my sister's wedding, exhausted and euphoric. And third, honestly, the compliments. It is the only garment I own that makes strangers ask where it is from.
Clothes are often dismissed as superficial, but this kurta taught me otherwise. Wearing something made with care, for occasions that matter, surrounded by people you love — that is not fashion. That is identity you can put on."
Vocabulary to steal

- see the human hand in every stitch — craftsmanship appreciation
- exhausted and euphoric — alliterative emotional pair
- identity you can put on — aphorism close
FAQs
Traditional or modern clothing?
Traditional clothing often scores better because it connects to culture and occasions, giving you richer material: weddings, festivals, heritage.
I know no fashion vocabulary. Help?
You need six words: fabric, fit, pattern, comfortable, elegant, goes with. That toolkit describes any garment fluently.
Can men answer this well?
Absolutely. A watch, a jacket, a sherwani, a favorite pair of shoes. Caring about one item reads as character, regardless of gender.
