Advice cards test wisdom delivery — the situation, what you said, and the humility of accepting their choice.

The card

Describe a time when you gave advice to someone.

You should say:

  • who you advised
  • what the situation was
  • what advice you gave

…and explain how they responded.

Plan it in 60 seconds

Pick advice with stakes — a decision that mattered. Note the person's dilemma, your exact counsel (one or two sentences), and their response plus the outcome. Dilemma, counsel, outcome: complete arc.

A Band-9 model answer

"Two years ago, my younger cousin was offered two paths after school: a safe accounting degree his parents wanted, or a design program he dreamed about but feared was impractical. He called me at midnight, voice tight, asking what he should do — the classic crossroads call.

My advice had two parts. First, I told him the uncomfortable truth: no choice is safe, only differently risky — accounting risked four years of misery, design risked financial uncertainty. Framing both as gambles removed the illusion that one path was fear-free. Second, I suggested a test: spend one month building a small design portfolio alongside applications. If the work energized him, that was data; if it felt like homework, that was data too.

He took the test. Within three weeks he was waking early to design, unprompted — the first time I had seen him disciplined about anything. He chose design, and has since won two student competitions. His parents, initially furious, now brag about him at gatherings.

He responded with relief, mostly — someone had permitted him to want what he wanted. That is what good advice often is: not direction but permission. I learned that advising is listening wearing a mask; I barely spoke that night, yet he credits me. Sometimes the best counsel is reflecting someone's own courage back at them."

Language worth borrowing

  • crossroads call — midnight dilemma (original phrase)
  • differently risky — risk reframing (precise concept)
  • removed the illusion — clarity as gift
  • energized vs homework — passion test contrast
  • permission, not direction — advice redefined
  • listening wearing a mask — advising as listening metaphor
