Describe a Team Activity You Joined: Cue Card + Band-9 Answer
A Band-9 answer to the 'team activity' cue card with collaboration storytelling, teamwork vocabulary, and role-based structure.
Team cards want roles and friction — who did what, what went wrong, how you fixed it together.
The cue card
Describe a team activity you joined.
You should say:
- what the activity was
- who was on the team
- what your role was
…and explain what you learned from it.
Your 1-minute prep plan
Pick an activity with a deadline and a disagreement — class project, office task, sports match, volunteer drive. Note your role, the conflict, and the resolution. Conflict plus resolution is a complete story.
Band-9 sample answer
"In my final university year, I joined a five-person team for a national business-plan competition. We had three weeks to research, write, and present a startup proposal — and none of us had ever done anything like it.
My role was market research and slides, but roles blurred constantly. Our team was gloriously mismatched: an engineer who trusted only numbers, a marketing student who trusted only stories, and me in the middle translating between them. Midway through, we had a genuine blow-up — the engineer called our concept fluffy, the marketer called his data soulless, and for two days nobody spoke outside group meetings.
What saved us was a forced reset: our professor made us pitch to first-year students, whose confused faces proved both sides right — our numbers were solid but our story was impenetrable. We rebuilt the presentation around one human problem instead of fifty features, and ended up placing second nationally.
I learned that teams fail not from weak people but from untranslated strengths. Everyone was right in their own language; we just needed a shared one. That lesson — that disagreement is data — now shapes how I handle every group task, including group discussions in IELTS preparation classes."

FAQs
Sports or work project: which is better?
Whichever had conflict and resolution. A team that disagreed then united gives you narrative arc; a smooth project gives you a list.
How do I talk about others without rambling?
Give each teammate one trait and one action. One_trait plus one_action keeps people vivid without derailing your story.
What if I prefer working alone?
Say so honestly, then explain what the team taught you anyway. Reluctant-team-player-turned-convert is a great character arc.
