Spectator cards need atmosphere — the crowd, the tension, and your rituals around the screen or stadium.

What you will be asked

Describe a sport you like to watch.

You should say:

  • what the sport is
  • where you watch it
  • who you watch it with

…and explain why you enjoy watching it.

Your 60-second plan

Pick your genuine obsession — the sport whose results you actually check. Note where and with whom you watch, one unforgettable match, and what the viewing ritual means to you. Ritual plus memory equals fandom.

Model answer (Band 8–9)

"The sport that owns my emotions is cricket — specifically, Pakistan's matches, which I watch with the superstitious intensity of a man defusing a bomb. My viewing station is my living room couch, same cushion, same jersey, surrounded by whoever can tolerate my shouting.

My ritual is elaborate and entirely irrational. I must sit in the same spot for the whole innings; if we start losing while I am relaxed, I stand up, because clearly my posture affects eleven men hundreds of miles away. My friends mock me, then quietly adopt their own rituals — nobody touches the remote during a tense over. We have become a small cult of cause and effect.

The match I will never forget was a last-over chase two years ago: nine runs needed, one wicket left, and the entire nation seemingly holding its breath as one. When the winning boundary was hit, my street erupted — car horns, fireworks, strangers hugging. I had tears in my eyes over a game, which tells you how sport bypasses rationality entirely.

I enjoy it because cricket, at its best, is collective storytelling — hope, despair, and redemption compressed into an evening, shared with millions simultaneously. In an age of solitary screens, it manufactures togetherness. That shared pulse, strangers celebrating as family, is why I will never stop watching."
