Friend cards need an origin story — how you met is the most naturally entertaining minute you will ever speak.

The cue card

Describe a good friend of yours.

You should say:

  • who they are
  • how you met
  • what you do together

…and explain why they are a good friend.

Your 1-minute prep plan

Lead with the meeting — funny, unlikely, or fated meetings hook listeners instantly. Then note what you do together and one incident proving the friendship. Origin, habit, proof: complete.

Band-9 sample answer

"My best friend is Usman, whom I met in the most ridiculous way possible: we were assigned the same university dorm bed due to an administrative error, argued about it for an hour, and have been inseparable for eight years since.

He is my opposite in nearly every way — tall where I am short, calm where I am anxious, a night owl to my early mornings. What we share is humor: an identical, slightly dark sense of the absurd that has carried us through failed exams, job rejections, and one memorable night locked out of our apartment in the rain, laughing too hard to feel cold.

What we do together has evolved. It used to be cricket and cheap restaurants; now, living in different cities, it is long voice notes, annual trips, and a shared document where we track books to argue about. The format changed; the frequency never did.

He is a good friend because he practices what I call alert loyalty — he notices before I ask. When my father was hospitalized last year, Usman appeared at the hospital before I had told anyone beyond family; he had read it in my silence on our call. Friends celebrate your wins; rare ones detect your losses. That detection is why he is closer than blood some days."

Vocabulary to steal

  • administrative error — bureaucratic mishap (precise noun)
  • inseparable since — lasting bond, clean phrase
  • identical sense of the absurd — shared humor, elevated
  • alert loyalty — noticing before being asked (original phrase)
  • read it in my silence — emotional perception
  • closer than blood some days — bold, honest close

FAQs

Old friend or new friend?

Old friends give you shared history; new friends give you discovery stories. Either works if you include one specific shared memory.

How do I avoid generic praise?

Replace every adjective with an incident. Not loyal but called me daily during my exams. Incidents prove traits.

Can I talk about an online friend?

Yes. Gaming friends, study partners, communities you have never met in person all count. Describe the connection, not the medium.
