Describe a Gift You Received: Cue Card + Band-9 Answer

A Band-9 answer to the 'gift you received' cue card with giver-story structure, gratitude language, and emotional precision.

Gift cards are giver stories — who chose it, why, and how it felt to be known. The gift is just the prop.

The card

Describe a gift you received.

You should say:

  • what the gift was
  • who gave it to you
  • when you received it

…and explain why it was special.

Plan it in 60 seconds

Pick a gift that proves someone knows you — the thoughtfulness is your thesis. Note the giver, the occasion, the unwrapping moment, and why it fit you. Fit is the story.

A Band-9 model answer

"The most meaningful gift I have ever received was a fountain pen from my best friend, given on the night before I left for university. It was not expensive — a modest black pen in a simple box — but I have kept it for six years and use it to sign anything important.

The moment stays vivid. We were sitting on my packed bedroom floor the evening before my flight, both pretending we were fine about the goodbye. She handed me a small parcel and said, 'For all the essays that will make you famous.' I laughed, then immediately cried, which tells you everything about that night.

What makes it special is how precisely it fits. She knew I love handwritten notes, knew I was terrified of the academic writing ahead, and somehow turned a twenty-dollar pen into a vote of confidence. Every time I pick it up — exams, job applications, now IELTS practice essays — I remember that someone believed in my writing before I had written anything worth believing in.

Gifts, I have learned, are rarely about objects. They are messages in physical form, and this one said: I see who you are becoming. No expensive present has ever matched that sentence."

Language worth borrowing

  • pretending we were fine — understated emotion
  • a vote of confidence — belief expressed as support
  • stays vivid — memory that remains clear
  • precisely fits — thoughtfulness, exact adjective
  • messages in physical form — redefinition of gifts
  • I see who you are becoming — powerful quoted line

Quick answers

Expensive gift or meaningful gift?

Meaningful, always. Thoughtfulness gives you story; price gives you a number. Examiners score narrative, not net worth.

What if I cannot remember details?

Reconstruct plausibly: the occasion, the wrapping, your reaction. Emotional truth matters more than photographic accuracy.

Should I describe the wrapping?

One sentence of unwrapping detail builds anticipation beautifully. The moment before seeing the gift is pure narrative tension — use it.
