Festival cards test cultural explanation — describe your world so a stranger sees it. That clarity is pure Coherence.

What you will be asked

Describe an important festival in your country.

You should say:

  • what the festival is
  • when it takes place
  • what people do during it

…and explain why it is important.

Your 60-second plan

Pick the festival you know most personally, not the most famous one. Note when it happens, three things people do, and one childhood memory of it. The memory is what separates your answer from a thousand identical ones.

Model answer (Band 8–9)

"The festival I would choose is Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting. It moves with the lunar calendar, so it falls about ten days earlier each year — this year we celebrated it in spring.

Preparations begin days before. Homes are cleaned thoroughly, new clothes are bought — children especially live for their Eid outfits — and kitchens fill with the smell of sheer khurma, a sweet vermicelli dessert my family makes in enormous quantities. On the morning itself, men attend special prayers at the mosque while preparations finish at home, then the visiting begins: relatives, neighbors, friends, wave after wave, each staying for food and conversation.

My sharpest memory is from childhood: my grandfather distributing Eidi — crisp banknotes given to children — from a 시간을 envelope, with a solemnity that made small coins feel like treasure. I would count my collection obsessively and hide it under my pillow.

Eid matters because it converts a month of private discipline into collective joy. Fasting teaches restraint; the festival teaches gratitude and generosity — charity to the poor is actually obligatory before the prayers. In a busy modern life, it is one of the few occasions my entire extended family still gathers, and that continuity feels increasingly precious."

Phrases examiners reward

  • marks the end of — precise festival framing
  • moves with the lunar calendar — explaining simply for a foreigner
  • live for their Eid outfits — enthusiasm, natural phrasing
  • wave after wave — repetition for abundance
  • converts discipline into joy — elegant contrast
  • continuity feels precious — reflective, high-level close

Common questions

Should I explain the festival to a foreigner?

Yes, assume the examiner knows nothing. Explaining simply and clearly is itself a Band-9 skill: it forces organized, accessible language.

Religious or national festival: which is safer?

Either, described respectfully and factually. Avoid preaching or criticizing beliefs. Cultural description, not religious advocacy, is the task.
