Process diagrams are the most-missed Task 1 type because students describe them like graphs or charts. They are not data — they are sequences. You need a different vocabulary, a different tense, and a different structure.

This guide shows exactly how to write a process diagram for both natural and man-made processes, with vocabulary, structure, and 3 model answers.

What Is a Process Diagram?

A process diagram shows how something works, how something is made, or how something happens. There are two main types:

Natural Processes

How something happens in nature:

  • The water cycle
  • How a river forms or erodes
  • How a plant grows from seed
  • How a volcano forms
  • How coral reefs form
  • Animal life cycles (butterfly, frog, salmon)

Natural processes use present tense and active voice. "The water evaporates. The vapor rises. The vapor condenses."

Man-Made Processes

How something is produced or made:

  • How chocolate is made
  • How electricity is generated (solar, wind, hydro, coal)
  • How wine or beer is produced
  • How a product is manufactured
  • How waste is recycled
  • How a building is constructed

Man-made processes use present tense and passive voice. "The cocoa beans are roasted. The beans are then ground. The mixture is heated."

Hybrid Processes

Some diagrams show both — how a natural resource is extracted and processed into a product. These use a mix of active and passive voice.

The 4-Paragraph Structure

Every IELTS process diagram answer uses the same 4-paragraph structure.

Paragraph 1: Introduction (1-2 sentences)

Paraphrase what the process shows. Do not copy the question word for word.

Question: "The diagram below shows the process of making chocolate from cocoa beans."

Answer: "The diagram illustrates the process by which chocolate is produced from cocoa beans, involving several stages from harvesting to the final product."

Paragraph 2: Overview (2-3 sentences)

State the start and end points, or summarize the main stages. Do not describe specific details.

Answer: "Overall, the process consists of several stages, beginning with the harvesting of cocoa pods and culminating in the production of various chocolate products. There are both agricultural and industrial stages involved."

Paragraph 3: First Half of the Process (3-5 sentences)

Describe the first half of the stages in sequence.

Answer: "The process begins with the harvesting of ripe cocoa pods, which are then split open to reveal the cocoa beans. These beans are fermented for several days and then laid out to dry in the sun. Once dry, the beans are roasted in large ovens to bring out their flavor."

Paragraph 4: Second Half of the Process (3-5 sentences)

Describe the remaining stages in sequence.

Answer: "After roasting, the beans are crushed to remove their husks, leaving the cocoa nibs. These nibs are then ground into a thick paste, which is mixed with sugar, milk powder, and other ingredients. Finally, the chocolate mixture is poured into molds and allowed to cool, producing the final chocolate bars."

Sequence Words: The Most Important Vocabulary

Process diagrams are sequence-based. You need a range of sequence words to mark the order of stages.

The mistake: using the same sequence word repeatedly. "First... then... then... then... then... finally." This is a Band 7.5 mistake. Vary your sequence words.

The fix: use a mix of sequence words and stage references. "In the first stage... Following this... Once the X is complete... Subsequently... In the final stage..."

Passive Voice: The Critical Grammar for Man-Made Processes

Man-made processes use passive voice because the focus is on the action, not the actor. You do not know who is performing the action.

Common Mistakes in Process Diagrams

Mistake 1: Using the Wrong Voice

Active voice for man-made processes is a Band 7 mistake. If you write "Workers harvest the pods" instead of "The pods are harvested," you lose marks for Grammatical Range (passive voice is a complex structure).

The fix: default to passive voice for man-made processes. Active voice for natural processes.

Mistake 2: Adding Information Not in the Diagram

Process diagrams are descriptive. You describe what is shown. You do not explain why or add background information. "The cocoa is grown in tropical regions" is invented information if the diagram does not show this.

The fix: describe only what is in the diagram. If the diagram shows a temperature of 200°C, mention it. If it does not, do not invent one.

Mistake 3: Missing the Overview

Some students write a process answer without an overview. This caps the answer at Band 6 for Task Achievement. The overview is required.

The fix: always include 2-3 sentences summarizing the start, end, and main stages.

Mistake 4: Wrong Word Count

Process answers must be at least 150 words. Most students over-write (250+ words) by adding invented information. Others under-write (120 words) by skipping stages.

The fix: aim for 170-200 words. Describe all stages in 1-2 sentences each. Skip invented details.

Mistake 5: Repetitive Sequence Words

"First... then... then... then... finally." This is a Band 7.5 mistake. The examiner sees formulaic sequence.

The fix: vary your sequence words. Use stage references ("in the next stage", "in the final phase") mixed with adverbs.

How to Get Feedback on Process Answers

Process diagrams have specific criteria:

  • Task Achievement: coverage of stages, accurate sequence
  • Coherence: clear paragraphing, sequence words
  • Lexical Resource: process-specific vocabulary
  • Grammar: passive voice accuracy, range of structures

AI feedback (Band9Prep or similar) is best for daily practice. Human examiner feedback is best for occasional calibration. For most students, AI feedback 3-4 times per week is enough.
