Booking regular IELTS when you needed UKVI — or UKVI when regular would do — is a INR 17,000 mistake you cannot convert, transfer or refund your way out of. The tests look identical from the desk. The Home Office treats them as different universes.
This guide answers the ielts ukvi booking question completely: UKVI vs regular, who needs which, how to book, what it costs, and where Life Skills fits.
UKVI vs Regular IELTS: The Only Difference That Matters
Content, format, timing, scoring — identical. An Academic UKVI paper and a regular Academic paper test the same skills to the same bands. Three things differ:
| Feature | Regular IELTS | IELTS for UKVI |
|---|---|---|
| Test centre | Any IELTS centre | UKVI-approved (SELT-audited) centres only |
| Security/verification | Standard ID + biometrics | Enhanced recording, auditing, Home Office reporting |
| Accepted for UK visa | No | Yes — on the SELT list |
That is the whole distinction, and it is absolute: UKVI acceptance comes from where and how the test was administered, not from your score. A Band 8.0 on regular IELTS is worth zero for a visa application. There is no upgrade path, no conversion letter, no appeal — you rebook and resit.

Who Needs IELTS UKVI (and Who Does Not)
Book UKVI if IELTS is your evidence of English for a UK visa or immigration decision:
- Student visa applicants using IELTS to meet the Home Office English requirement.
- Skilled Worker / Health and Care Worker visas where IELTS is the chosen SELT.
- Family, partner, settlement and citizenship routes — usually Life Skills (see below) rather than full UKVI.
- Anyone whose sponsor or solicitor says "SELT required" — SELT means UKVI.
You can usually book regular IELTS when English proof stays outside the visa decision: a UK university assessing you under its own sponsor licence arrangements (some accept regular IELTS — confirm in writing), non-UK destinations, employment unconnected to UK immigration, or personal benchmarking.
The danger zone is the middle case: "my university accepts regular IELTS but I'm also applying for the visa." The visa requirement governs. Universities can be flexible; the Home Office cannot. When in doubt, book UKVI — it is accepted everywhere regular IELTS is plus the visa routes, so the only cost of over-insuring is the fee difference.
Which UKVI Test Type: Academic, General Training or Life Skills?
| Route | Book this | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| Study (degree level, Student visa) | IELTS for UKVI Academic | All 4 skills, academic context |
| Work / migration (Skilled Worker etc.) | IELTS for UKVI General Training | All 4 skills, general context |
| Family visa, extension, settlement, citizenship | IELTS Life Skills A1/A2/B1 | Speaking + Listening only, pass/fail |
| Unsure | Ask sponsor/solicitor before paying | Wrong type = resit |
Life Skills deserves a pause because candidates keep booking the wrong thing. It is a 16–22 minute paired speaking-and-listening test, graded pass/fail against a CEFR level — no bands, no Reading or Writing. A1 covers entry routes, A2 covers extensions, B1 covers settlement/citizenship. If your letter says "Life Skills B1," a full UKVI Academic Band 7 does not substitute.
One more exclusion to note: One Skill Retake is not available for UKVI or Life Skills. If you miss a UKVI band, the fix is a full resit — which makes understanding band score calculation and one-skill retake eligibility (for non-UKVI tests) worth your time before you book.
How to Book IELTS for UKVI Step by Step
- Confirm your route in writing — visa category + required test type + minimum CEFR/band, from your sponsor, university compliance team or solicitor.
- Go to the official UKVI booking page (IDP or British Council — both sell UKVI, availability differs by city). Never book UKVI through agents or lookalike sites.
- Select "IELTS for UKVI" explicitly — not plain Academic/General. Then pick Academic vs General vs Life Skills per step 1.
- Choose a UKVI-approved centre. Fewer centres offer UKVI than regular IELTS, so book earlier — 3–6 weeks lead time is normal.
- Register with a valid passport (UKVI is passport-only everywhere) and check name spelling matches character-for-character.
- Pay the UKVI fee (higher than regular — see below) and save the confirmation showing the UKVI/SELT designation.
Verify the confirmation email actually says UKVI before you close the tab. A booking at a UKVI centre for the regular product still produces a regular TRF — the product label, not the building, is what counts.
Fees and Lead Times
UKVI costs more because the centres carry audit and reporting overhead. Indicative figures (confirm live — fees move):
| Product | Typical fee range |
|---|---|
| Regular IELTS (reference) | ~INR 17,000 / ~GBP 200 |
| IELTS for UKVI (Academic/GT) | ~10–25% higher (~INR 18,000–19,500 / ~GBP 220–240) |
| IELTS Life Skills | Lower (~INR 16,000+ / ~GBP 180–200 equivalent) |
| Reschedule/transfer | Transfer fee; inside 5 days needs medical evidence |
| Extra TRF sends | Same 5-free-copies rule as regular |
Lead times run longer than regular IELTS because approved centres and Life Skills sessions are scarcer. If your CAS or visa deadline is fixed, book the seat first, prepare around it — waiting until you feel ready routinely means no seats before the deadline. General booking tactics are covered in how to book your IELTS test, and the door rules in the exam-day guide.
Test Day and Results for UKVI Candidates
Test day is stricter theatre on the same play: passport-only ID, biometric enrolment, continuous recording, zero tolerance on devices. Results arrive on the same timelines (3–5 days computer-delivered, ~13 days paper-based) and the TRF carries the SELT/UKVI designation plus a reference number the Home Office verifies directly.
TRF validity is the same two years, and the five-free-sends machinery works identically — nominate your sponsor/university for direct sends. Keep your SELT reference with your visa file; caseworkers verify electronically, so a self-emailed PDF is backup, not proof.
Common UKVI Booking Mistakes
- Booking regular IELTS "to try first." Trial runs are fine for practice, but the score can never transfer to a visa file — budget for the UKVI sitting as the real one.
- Picking Academic when the route needs General (or vice versa). The Home Office checks test type against the route; a valid score in the wrong type is still invalid.
- Booking Life Skills for a study visa. Life Skills tests only Speaking and Listening — degree routes need all four skills via UKVI Academic.
- Assuming One Skill Retake will fix a UKVI miss. OSR excludes UKVI entirely, so a shortfall means a full resit — prepare accordingly.
- Letting the passport expire mid-process. The passport on the booking, the TRF and the visa application should tell one consistent story; renew early if expiry is near.
The Bottom Line
Visa needs UKVI. Study-or-work context picks Academic vs General; family/settlement routes pick Life Skills. Book the UKVI-labelled product at an approved centre with your passport, build in extra lead time, and confirm the route in writing before you pay. Get that chain right and the test itself is just IELTS.
