How to Book IELTS One Skill Retake (2026)
Main Content

Booking One Skill Retake takes about ten minutes — if you are eligible and your timing is right. Most failed bookings come from three avoidable mistakes: counting the 60-day window from the wrong date, trying a different centre, or paying before confirming your institution accepts OSR.

This walkthrough covers the checks to run before you log in, the step-by-step portal flow for IDP and British Council, fees, and what to confirm after payment.

If you have not yet confirmed OSR is right for you, read One Skill Retake rules and eligibility first.

Before You Log In: 5 Eligibility Checks

Do these before touching the portal. Each one is a hard requirement — failing any of them means the portal will either block you or, worse, take a booking you cannot use.

  1. Your original test was computer-delivered IELTS Academic or General Training. Paper-based, UKVI, Life Skills and IELTS Online are excluded.
  2. You booked through IDP or the British Council at an OSR-enabled centre, and you will re-sit with the same provider and centre.
  3. You are within 60 days of the original test date. Count from the day you sat the test, not the day results arrived. There are no extensions.
  4. You have received your original results and have used no OSR attempt from this test. One skill, one attempt only.
  5. Your target institution accepts OSR for your intake and route. Get this in writing — an email from admissions, not a forum screenshot.

Also keep your identification ready: the same valid passport or national ID used for the original test, with matching name spelling. A mismatch between booking and ID is the most common test-day refusal. For general booking background, see how to book your IELTS test.

The 60-Day Window and Fees Explained

The 60-day rule is the part candidates most often misread, so treat this section as the fine print.

The window starts on your original test date and ends 60 calendar days later. If you tested on 1 July, your OSR must be sat on or before 30 August — even if results only arrived on 8 July. Booking portals enforce this automatically and will hide OSR dates outside the window, but do not rely on that: check the calendar yourself before planning prep, because a date that looks free may already be past your deadline.

Fees run at roughly 40 to 60 percent of a full test fee and vary by country and centre. As a rough guide, expect around INR 7,500 against a INR 17,000 full fee in India, or around GBP 110–130 against a GBP 200 full fee in the UK. Treat these as illustrations only — the price shown in your portal at checkout is the only figure that matters, and it changes faster than any guide can track. Payment is online by card in most countries; some centres offer additional local payment methods shown at checkout.

One more timing point: your new Test Report Form stays valid for two years from the original test date, not the OSR date. If your original test is already six months old, your OSR result inherits the remaining eighteen months. Factor that into deadline planning alongside exam day timelines.

Step by Step: Booking via IDP

IDP handles the majority of OSR bookings worldwide. The flow below matches the standard IDP candidate portal — labels vary slightly by country site.

  1. Go to the IDP IELTS website for your country and log in to the candidate portal with the same account and email used for the original booking. Do not create a second account — OSR eligibility is tied to your original test record.
  2. Open your results dashboard and find the eligible computer-delivered test. Eligible tests show a One Skill Retake option or banner next to the score. No OSR button means that test or centre is not eligible.
  3. Select One Skill Retake and choose exactly one skill: Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking. Double-check this choice — you cannot change skills or add a second skill after payment.
  4. Pick your date and slot from the available options at the same centre. Every date shown should fall inside your 60-day window; verify against your own count anyway.
  5. Confirm your personal details and ID document match the original booking exactly, including name spelling and document number.
  6. Pay the OSR fee shown at checkout and save the confirmation email and receipt. Check that the confirmation names the correct skill, date, centre and reporting time.

If the portal shows no OSR option despite an eligible-looking test, the usual causes are a closed 60-day window, a non-enabled centre, or logging in with a different email. Contact IDP support with your original Test Report Form number rather than guessing.

Step by Step: Booking via British Council

The British Council flow mirrors IDP with different portal labels. The eligibility rules are identical — same centre, same 60-day window, one skill, one attempt.

  1. Log in to the British Council IELTS booking and results portal for your country using your original booking credentials.
  2. Go to your test history or results section and locate the eligible computer-delivered test. Look for the One Skill Retake link or prompt beside it.
  3. Select the single skill to retake. Confirm you are choosing the skill that actually missed your requirement — check the numbers against how band scores are calculated before committing.
  4. Choose your centre (pre-filled as your original centre), date and time slot within the 60-day window.
  5. Review your ID details carefully. British Council centres are strict on document matching — bring the same passport or national ID to the retake.
  6. Complete online payment, then download or screenshot the confirmation with skill, date, centre address and arrival time.

British Council availability varies more by city than IDP in some regions, so if no OSR slots appear, try adjacent dates within your window before assuming the centre is not enabled. Slots release in batches and peak-season weekends go first.

What to Confirm Before You Pay

Run this checklist on the payment screen, before clicking confirm. Two minutes here saves the two most expensive mistakes: paying for an OSR your institution rejects, or paying for the wrong skill.

  • The skill selected is the one that missed your target, and your other three scores genuinely meet the requirement with no rounding confusion.
  • The test date shown falls inside 60 days of your original test date by your own count.
  • The centre and provider match your original test exactly.
  • Your name and ID number match your document letter for letter.
  • Your target institution has confirmed OSR acceptance in writing for your specific intake or visa route.
  • The fee, refund and rescheduling terms on screen are ones you accept — screenshot them, since OSR rescheduling is stricter than full-test rescheduling.

Unsure which skill to prioritise or whether the gap is closable in the remaining window? Compare both paths in One Skill Retake rules and eligibility and the standard booking guide at how to book your IELTS test before money changes hands.

After Booking: Test Day and Results

Preparation between booking and test day should be narrow: one skill, one weakness, daily timed practice. A Writing retake means daily Task 2 plans plus two timed essays per week. A Speaking retake means daily recorded Part 2 and Part 3 answers. Book one mock under exam conditions — logistics in exam day guide apply fully to OSR sittings.

On the day, arrive at the reporting time with the same ID and expect standard exam conditions. Results typically arrive within a few days, and you receive a new Test Report Form with the retaken score substituted. Institutions will assess the new TRF you submit.

If the retaken score still misses, you cannot OSR again from the same original test — the next step is a full retake as covered in how to book your IELTS test.

Common Booking Problems (and Fixes)

Portal shows no OSR option: you are likely outside the 60-day window, logged in with a different email, or at a non-enabled centre. Verify all three with your TRF number before contacting support.

Wrong skill selected after payment: portals generally do not allow skill changes after payment. Contact the centre immediately — some allow a correction before the test date, most do not, and you may need to forfeit and rebook if a slot remains in your window.

Institution rejects OSR after you sat it: this is the failure the pre-payment email prevents. If it happens, your scores are still valid for institutions that do accept OSR, but your target application needs a full retake. Get written acceptance first, every time.

ID mismatch at check-in: name spelling, document number or expiry differs from the booking. Centres can refuse entry with no refund. Fix the booking details with support days ahead, not at the desk.

The Bottom Line

Book OSR in the same portal as your original test, at the same centre, inside 60 days, for exactly one skill — and only after your institution confirms acceptance in writing. The booking itself is simple; the checks around it are what protect your fee.
